bad exerience with degassing resin

over the weekend i attempted my first ever infusion but i hit a snag when degassing my resin.

Anyway I degassed the resin but I think the problem was that I degassed for a very long time coz I was hoping that once I don’t get any bubbles @ all the resin will be ready, a minute after degassing the mixture increased in volume as expected but after that I started to see bubbles popping slowly so as I was hoping they will stop I continued to degas but after 10min or so the mixture started to boil violently after which I stopped the degassing so far so good but the resin was PIPING HOT  (not sure if this is normal). Thereafter I quickly transferred the resin to another cup so that I can infuse but right after this the mixture gelled to a rock solid state just when i was about to infuse. buy the way i’m working with Gurit Sp115 resin system.

has anyone come across this and any idea what i could have done wrong.

Thanks

your resin has a too short gel time.
With fast resin I degas for 5 min, no more. You need a longer catalyst for your resin

Concur, use a slower resin…

Ditto.

Also keep in mind that there is nothing better at insulating heat than vacuum.

Gurit SP115 is a laminating resin. You should use Gurit Prime20 LV, or ULV to infuse with.

when degassing use a flat wide cup instead of a deep narrow cup, exposed surface area is your friend for faster degassing.

Once your bubbles expand, and drop, you don’t need to degas any longer. Definitely not 10 more minutes. But as others said, a longer gel time resin also.

I have heard of SP115 being used to infuse small parts and also sicomin’s surf clear both with excellent results optically. I was speaking with a matrix (sicomin) rep recently who has worked for both companies and there is a ultra slow hardener which is not listed on the products list for the 115 or surfclear. You need to ask gurit or sicomin especially for it (I would guess its from one of their other systems but still compatible).

You can also get good results with sp ampreg 26 resin, use it with the slow hardener and keep the temps about 30 degree C for a cps of 250ish from memory. Demould in about 4 hours.

What are you making out of interest?

I will ask which Sicomin reference is used as ultra slow hardener for Surf Clear. (am Sicomin distributor in Netherlands / Belgium)
