Backwards Secondary Bonding

Has anyone here tried peel-ply on the mold side of the laminate? I have an issue with one of the parts I’m working on where I’d like to do secondary bonding on the mold surface and I’m not sure if I can just put peel-ply down first then start layup as normal.

I’ve never had a reason to do this till now, the other choice is to rework the mold but there’s a bunch of time associated with that.

I havn’t done this but heard of people doing it. Only downside I see is your going to be left with resin on the mold surface.

We do it quite often for a number of jobs, both prepreg and infused. We have had no issues with it. You don’t get resin left on the mould if your release is good.

Your right about the mould surface. My brain must be going bad cause I for some reason thought the OP wanted to also use it as a replacment for mould release. :o

Trust me, you will never get something out of a mould in 1 piece if you rely on a first layer of peelply as mould release. (tried it, crappy frekote…)

But yes, it can succesfully be done without problems. Make sure your peelply is of good quality and dry. This prevents wrinkling.

Ok guys thanks for confirming that, I’m going to give it a go. I’m not trying to use this as a mold release (?) just so I have a nice bonding surface for secondary bonding. I want to pull the part from the mold then remove the peel-ply. I hope all the material for the part stays with the part not the mold.
