ARG for wet layups

I’ve tried to do 2 molds off a simple flat piece of molding for my bike.
Both times I end up with crazy bubbles and voids in the corners and stuff.
I might as well buy a CNC machine and some aluminum billet.

I wish we got that Faro arm system…I could make CAD designs off anything in an hour.

your using PER arent you? or some type of ester? you have to coat your part with some sort of selant. PVA works well. your paint is what is reacting to the Ester resin.

I am not exactly sure what I am using. uscomposites tooling gelcoat epoxy, and Airtech’s low-temp tooling resin for the glass layup.
The part is coated with frekote’s B15 and 700NC release.

I think it’s just crap gelcoat laydown. I get a bubble in the corners and never notice it. Also, some of the flange tape lifted a bit , which lifted some of the glass away from the gelcoat.

i just need practice.

if ur using tape, you need to use a tape that wont react to the gelcoat / per. this is your prob. some plastics, and some paint will react badly to those chem.

Are you spraying the gelcoat?
You can’t infuse the mold for this piece? We haven’t done wet layup for molds or parts in a loong time. Wet layup only for small repairs, even then we try to infuse if possible.

never infused, and I don’t have the equipment at work to do that. I did a simple: flashbreaker the edge of the part for a flange, use more flashbreaker 1mil for rounding the part edges. Brushed on gelcoat, and layed on wetted out fiberglass. Small strips around the edges, and worked bigger pieces over the main section.
I’m sure it all is about practice.
Heck, the gelcoat didn’t even like to stay ON the part’s top corner and the flashbreaker due to the release coat.

fun times.
