Anyone go to walmart for therir peel ply?

Does anyone here go to walmart to get their peel ply? I went there yesterday and found a discount $1 section of fabric. I picked up a couple yards of polyester fabric that was very strechy to try it. I infused the part and it came off perfectly. I bet it will stick if I let it completly dry with it, but I peeled it once I peeled the bag of an infused part I did not heat. I went and bought like 300 yards for $300. It is very strechy and works great with major angles

Have you got any pics of what you’ve bought? Sadly we dont have a walmart where Im from so might have to visit the fabric shop :frowning:

I’ll have to check out the WalMart by me and see if they have it.

How easy or hard was it to pull it off the part?

yeah I can take some pics. as long as you pull it off before it cures it comes right off. I ususally pull off about 30 minutes after it gels

I can vouch for the walmart polyester “peel ply”. I got some and tried it… so long as you peel it off when the part is green it’s all good. It has great stretch to it.

did they have a $1 sale rack there?

Not sure why you wouldn’t just order actual peel ply. Might be OK to get materials at Walmart if you run out and need some in a hurry, but I wouldn’t use them as a supplier!

Ya gotta admit it’s pretty expensive stuff for something you’re just going to throw away. Maybe not for the Pro’s who can recover the costs of their consumables in their products but for us amateurs it’s a big consideration.

I’ve done some tests with nylon and polyester I’ve found at the local fabric store. It works ok if, as said, you peel when green. When I get to the point of infusing the hull on my boat I’m sure I’ll have to put out for the real stuff.

Nothing wrong with experimenting with your materials. It’s the only way some of us have to learn.

It’s just part of the business. Same thing as substituting bagging film or tacky tape. There are the right materials out there, and then there’s questionable that might work ok, or might cost a lot when it ruins a whole part.
But experimenting is definitely good. A few years back, Lockheed Martin was actually infusing huge war ship parts with mesh from Home Depot! Worked ok, but I showed them some different stuff for the application.

I think what “we” (amateur tinkerers) need is a “hobby shop” variety of infusion materials. I constantly scan e-Bay for deals (and have picked up a few) and do test some of the locally available consumables. Of which I’ve had some good success. But, when I go to build my boat I’ll be infusing a hull 31 feet long by 10 feet wide by 7 feed deep and that’ll involve a substantial amount of materials including the consumables. Roughly figuring about $1K in consumables and that’s a lot of money to toss in the trash after it’s all done but I guess there’s no option 'cause I’m not willing to risk a failure of a hull infusion on Wally World imitation peel ply!

PS. Just waiting on some samples of multi-axial basalt fabrics to show up from South Africa. It’s been used there on some new production sailing catamarans. Will post results of some test parts!

for me I have no reason to use anything else then the walmart peel ply lol. I have used it for about 6 months and never had a problem with it. I always peel my stuff off when it is green anyway so why not you know. If it is a large part I would use real peel ply and I always have some on hand but when most of my parts are small and the stuff is soooo strechy I prefer it just because of that. I go through about 40-50 yards a week of it so it is a substantial savings for me. I am one of those people that micro manage every penny I spend so I am always experimenting with new materials when I have the spare time. I am in it to make money so I will cut costs on anything that is not crutial to my part.

It’s crucial to not disturb the part until it’s fully cured. The peel ply should not be removed at the green stage.
But if it works for you, then that’s all that matters!

correct, and also most of the stuff I am making now is all cosmetic because that is what is selling for me. When I make more stuff for the race scene I do use normal materials. I did do a test with to see what it does if I left it cured. To say the least you will be sanding it off lol
