Anybody see the new episode of "RIDES"??

Just wondering because I have been into fiberglass building for about 4 years (not too long-mainly speakerboxes and car audio stuff) I have no experience with clay molding, but Im a quick learner …Just wondering about the clay molds that Chip Foose used to make the front bumper of that Caddy … I would like to do something similar to my truck …Is that a certain kind of clay or just modeling clay?? and also I saw some white stuff(dont even think about it ;0)…) they were smearing on the bumper after the mold was takin I guess anyways my main point is
-What and where to get the clay
-what release agent to use so that fiberglass wont stick(I usually use spray adhesive) not sure if it would work with clay
-should I lay the clay over my bumper, then mold or make thickness with polyurethane closed cell foam or other type?

Any Help is appreciated…I am still searching through post gathering all info I can …just thought I’d ask!!..=0)

come on fellas…this topic is open to anyone who may know…23 views and no opinions?? ;0)

Give it a day or few as most of “US pros” run our own businesses and or teach on the side…

Oil base model clay is a self releasing from composites…no mold release needed…

I didn’t catch that show…

I don’t know to be honest. I don’t see how you could use modeling clay to make a mold and still have it hold shape. Unless it’s a type of clay that dries out afterward.

at school we use a clay for making plugs… it’s stored in an oven so it’s hot and mallable. When it cools off it hardens… not all the way, but pretty good… you then pva and wax it, and pull your mold…

honestly, I absolutely hate the stuff. it’s so hard to get a nice finish on it… the molds always come out with tons of surface imperfections and other issues… I spent a good 6 hours yesterday sanding the piece I pulled out of the mold yesterday just to try to get it smooth… and that was only partially succesful

thanks for the replies guys…I have been doing some research on the clay molding…and have found a clay (chavants clay) that dries 3 hours after the last touch…and then the 'glass or whatever is put inside of it then pulled out smooth!..im sure its much easier said than done…what would you guys suggest??

If you watch the making of one of the new Ford’s. They were pulling molds off the clay model of the car. They did add a layer of something between the mold and the clay. The mold popped off with minimal damage to the clay.
