any way to fix these two infusion issues???

I infused this guy the other day which took over 10hrs!, trying to find leaks and blah blah blah… actually we didn’t find two leaks and we went ahead and infused anyway. Later on we realized they are cracks in the mold that were leaking through. Anyway the part came out ok except for two spots. One in the upper corners where the infusion just didn’t reach for some reason and one on the side which is interesting because the layers towards the bag were infused but the layers on the mold were not… very strange.

shocking the areas around the leaks were just fine so i think the MTI hose saved us there ; )

I want to salvage this part if possible. Any way to do that? I was thinking i would just saturate the areas in resin and clamp it or clamp it back in the mold.

thoughts?

i definitely can deal with the ugly parts on the fixed sections and clear coat the whole thing afterwards but if there is a pretty fix i am all ears. last resort is to paint the bad areas and just show a little bit of the carbon on the top of the part.

no one?

I figured i would just put resin in there and clamp it back in the mold. Any way to make it look pretty though?

Can you post a photo of the issues from The ‘bag side’ of the part? If the fibres aren’t totally wet out there then I would put the part back in the mould and infuse those 2 areas again. Best way to ensure that the layers are properly wet out, and will give you the best chance of a cosmetic finish, provided the resin can penetrate the fibres. Given how dry the surface is, I suspect it would.

The issue with this is that you have already demoulded the part, so you will likely get some resin bleeding across some of the surface. With any luck this will be minimal and you can sand it flat and polish it back up, though epoxy doesn’t polish to too well.

The whole inside of the part is infused and it looks like just the top layer in those sections were not infused. i think the best approach is to remove the top layer and replace/build it up with resin. it would give a different depth but i would look a lot better than a bunch of miss aligned strands.

You can always infuse again on the areas that the resin didnt get to. I have done this before on large parts where the resin starts going off before it reaches the and of the part. Otherwise you can cut the area out, put in new material in the bad areas and re infuse, or just wet layup if you’re not terribly concerned about the visuals.

how do you re infuse just a section? any pics?

You have to rebag the whole thing, but you just place flow mesh and a feed on each location.

A lot of times, depending on how far you have to flow you can just use peel ply. If it’s already Unbagged you’ll have to re bag the part. If you notice an area didn’t make it with resin before you unbag, you can use a plastic syringe to poke a hole in the bag and inject some resin in the bad area seal the hole and let the vac pump work its magic. Works great, and you’ll never even see where the resin flow originally stopped.
