How much wax is everyone using for flat panels? Ive been using 8-10 coats of wax with 1 hour time between coats. Is this too much? This is also using vacuum bagging to make the panels. Also How much time to you let your materials stay under vacuum before you unbag them. The previous bagging attempt I did released but there was a thin layer of epoxy with the cf imprint left of the glass. I will take some pics to show you what I mean when I get home from work. Any help would be great. I looking to make some flawless pieces and with your help I know I can.
depends on the wax really.i use mequiers mirror glaze and its never let me down yet even with 3 coats on a fresh gelcoat mold with only 10 mins between each coat.on glass i would suspect i could get away with 2 coats.the wax i used before this was hopeless and rarely released even with 10 coats.the mirror glaze is fantastic stuff.
I use regular old release wax “TR104” and I wax, let haze and buff off (say ten minutes???) and on a brand new piece never been molded from…5 coat should be more than enough. Then go down to three for a couple parts and then one coat every part.
Yeah I’m using the mirror glaze too. I’m going to try doing 3 coats and see how it turns out. Do you prep your glass with anything special or just clean it and wax it?
The secret to waxing is letting it haze up and then litely buff with turning the terry cloth over many times. Do not buff off the wax as most will do…
PS: Meguirs has just had some “sales people seminars” for their NEW COMPOSITES MOLD RELEASE SYSTEM! ;)
I’ll have to try it that way this weekend.
