Alligators are loose in So. Calif. area....

At trimes I think i’m like most of my students with ADD…LOL.

Anyway, in a rush and trying something different (I like to experiment but it sometimes bites me in the back side) I encounter mass alligatoring. Geeez, after all the years I’ve been doing this…

Anyway, while rain drops are falling outside (yes, even in So. Calif…) I had a brain fart…er brain strom…take black gel coat (part was black gel coated, duh…) mix some talcum / micro balloons to thicken it up, catalysted it, applyed it to the bad snapping alligatoring areas and then use PE / vacuum bagging sheet film to cover and smooth it out. You can see how it is flowing out (you might want to wash down the area before hand to remove any wax first) and you don’t even have to tape it down.

It work dang good in filling, keeping the color and smooth out those areas. It also kept the air from it so it sanded easier just like if it was sprayed with PVA or surfacing agent was added (a little tip: I thought surfacing agent / liquid wax would never go bad so I bought a gallon several years ago, last night I grab it to show the students how to and why to use it and it was gelled!)

Thanks for reminding me why I’m never using polyester again.

i’ve found that a mix of 15 ml of resin, 10-15 mil of microballoons, and 25-30 ml of caposil is a good mix of mold repair. I’ve also found that with the white surface coat that i use, that white bondo and white hardener work just as well, and faster and easier to sand.
