adhesive needed

for bonding abs plastic to carbon fiber.

will urethane adhesive work? if so maybe someone can put up a link where to buy it.

Download the Huntsman app for you telephone.

This will pop out 14 products that will work. You need to refine the search by selecting what you are looking for in terms of gap fill, cure speed, heat resistance, etc. until there are 3 or less products.

I played a bit with the numbers, and it gave me 2 MMA based glues. But I suggest refining yourself with numbers that are applicable to your situation.

This may not be helpful if your carbon is already cured…

Wakeboard builders use abs rails to protect a foam core, they “flame treat” the abs with a torch prior to laying up in order to make sure the epoxy sitcks to abs in a wet layup,

Haven’t looked into the chemistry of why this works, or the bond strength of the finished product but it difinetly holds together. May be worth trying a test panel if it makes sense for your application.

that is interesting that flame heating abs will cause better adhesion… good to know.

Thank you also Herman, i will download the app and check out what they recommend.

Panel bond is the best, it’s stupid strong. In fact my whole car was manufactured with it instead of welds. We use it for everything under the sun. It is a little over kill if it’s not for structural bonding and I would not use it to glue coring in such as polyethylene cores for paneling (Tesla Roadster).

Need to really know application. Tabs? Mount points? Is the ABS part of ur layup?

If heat isn’t a problem, I would suggest using a methacrylate chemistry adhesive. It “bites” the styrene in the ABS. If the carbon laminate is made with polyester it will do the same with its styrene. If the laminate is epoxy then the methacrylate bonds well via a mechanical bond. methacrylates can be purchased in side-by-side tubes at many hardware stores. It stinks like a “skunk” until cured. Urethane adhesives usually need primers or very good sanding and cleaning to work. All adhesive bonds should be properly cleaned.
