a better top reinforcement?

Hello all,

I will be doing a vacuum infusion of a part that needs an A grade cosmetic finish. Using of course a infusion grade epoxy I am going to try this stack from my mold.

  1. frekote release
  2. IMC from German Advanced Composites
  3. Blue Kevlar/CF 2/2 3k
  4. Unidirectional CF
  5. Soric XF
  6. 2/2 twill 3k CF

Now I am wondering about the Kevlar/Carbon. I have heard on here that 6k is harder to infuse because the weave is so tight but in my opinion looks better. They have this Kevlar/CF in 5.5oz and a special high density 6.6oz. will I run into any surface or Infusion problems using the high density.

Any opinions would be great, thank you.

Do a test sample?

yea that would be the best option. I guess I was just wondering some opinions on infusions and high density weaves and reinforcements like 6k and greater.

It’s much more likely that your unidirectional is going to be your issue rather than the 6k woven. If it is a hot melt bonded unidirectional then they have very poor permeability. That being said, your laminate is so thin that you’re not going to have a problem regardless. As long as you are using an infusion grade resin and you’re working in good temperatures (mold temp is at least 75F) you should be fine. Keep in mind that you might get some print through from the soric XF. Putting your uni where it is is indeed a great idea as it’ll help with print through mitigation but XF is their most pattern rich core so if you don’t post cure properly (in mold) then you might start to see some faint outlines of hexagons on your a side surface

great thank you craj103tx I just ordered some SF to try that out. I have had samples come out with the faint hexagons before. they even make a TF but I cant really find an easy online supplier.
