3M Super 77 problem?

Hi guys,

I bought 3M Super 77 spray adhesive for the first time. I tried it several times but it seem to me that something is not ok. Im not able to spray light even coat of adhesive. No matter how easy Im on the trigger it always spill lot of adhesive (mainly in the center). Is it OK? Please look at the picture. I dont think this is safe way to use it on composite layers.

Thanks for help.

Mike

I beleive the best way is to lightly mist the object, even if it means baisicly spraying the adhesive airborn only to let the fog drop to the part. Pooling or puddles like your pic are gonna show in the part, and if the adhesive isn’t dry, it may complicate saturation with resin.

Cat is right.

Are you using PER? If so, Richmond sells a special spray adhesive just for use with PER and VIP.

Thanks guys, but I use epoxy

I don’t know about you, but my Super 77 (as I recall) comes with two different spray nozzles…I always use a fan-shaped spray, since it seems to be easier to control than the cone-shaped spray pattern. I also hold the fabric as far away from the spray as possible.

IF you completely soaked the composite with the stuff, then I agree that the interlaminar bonds will be compromised, but a very light misting, from a distance, just to make the fabric conform and stick to the layer next to it, shouldn’t affect the layup appreciably.

As others have mentioned, try a different nozzle that doesn’t flow so much and has a fan pattern instead of cone.
Keep your distance and only get a light mist on the material.

Wow my super 77 came with only one classic nozzle. Can anybody make a picture of fan-shaped nozzle please?

I think the nozzle they talk about is on the can, but the exit hole rotates or something?

Ahh the tune-able nozle. Just pull one off a spray-bomb can and insert into super 77 can. It’ll leave a mist light enough to glue your arm hairs together. The “t” may come out of the factory nozzle also, just can’t seem to remember.

Ok it looks like its working. I cleaned nozzle with acetone, set it to High. Really messy thing. Its not hard to over spray and everything around is tacky… Thanks for your help.
