just made a copy of my classic car rear under body guard, i waxed up the orignal and sprayed pva on it ( just to make shore the part will pop off) , iam well happy with it much stiffer than the orignal which was glass and polyester and now much lighter
Looks great. How bad did the pva ruin your surface finish?
What materials and method did you use for the part? Keep up the good work!
Wow that looks good. I wish my part looked that good the second time around.
release wax a few coats
sprayed pva on the the orignal panel to enshore it came off
sp106 slow resin
2 layers carbon 2x2 twill 200g either side of diolen 200g
porous release film
breather fabric
vacuum bagged
The surface finish was ok , i can still see the surface from the pattern, it can off the pattern realy well, i sprayed a couple of light coats and let it gell off then a heavyer coat so to would flow , a mould would have been much better finish , but i will only need to do a couple of these i think and you will not see the panel unless you lay under the car. i plan on having a go at a roof and rear bumper soon
HAHAHAHA FUNNY!!!
For a second part everrrrr you did a great job!!! Well Done
ive done a couple of flat bits and some radio control glider elevons thats about all i have done
Thats awesome! Is there any way to do that without vaccum bagging?
ive never done a lay up with out vacuum, i wouldnt think the carbon cloth would conform too the mold.
I watched a video showing (below) them making it without vacuum. This is great, most of all of my moulds don’t have flanges on them so I can’t bag them without major mould rework. I tried this process several times with polyester and had horrible results with tons of air bubbles…any advise ??
you dont neccessarly need flanges on a mold to vacuum. a lot of times you can bag the entire mold in a big bag. however if you dont have a vacuum pump or the materials needed to vacuum you will need to get some fiberglass metal rollers to remove the air manually. also if you prewetting your material out side the mold or if your material lifts off the mold surface after getting wet it is much harder to remove the air, so you are best to put the fabric in dry then wet it out. at the end of the day open molding sucks for this reason and the parts are much heavier and weaker.
I think I’m gonna try hand laying next with epoxy from these guys, they say their epoxy resin is good for hand laying carbon. Will PMR semi permanant release work OK with epoxy resin? It’s already on all our moulds and it makes my PVA fish eye so I cant use PVA and it will contaminate the PMR surfaces.
