Hey guys. As you know, I rarely do anything that requires or warrants a nice finish. I’ve seen people talk about 2k paint all the time. After a little searching, seems to NOT just be a can of spray paint. 1: Can I brush it on a mold as the clear coat? 2: Can I get a small refillable spray (http://www.amazon.com/Preval-267-Complete-Spray-Gun/dp/B0000AY19M) and use that? I will only be doing small parts, so large coverage is no issue. What issues do you find with 2k? Does it work with epoxy and VER? I only use them. What about bonding to plastics? Is it sandable and then polishable using metal polishes? (or AlO2 powder)
Thanks!
You could use a brush to apply 2k paint/clearcoat but you would not get a very good finish and would have to do a lot of sanding/polishing. You could possibly use a preval sprayer but you would need to thin the paint to its fullest range(usually 10%)I find those preval sprayers struggle with anything slightly thicker than water. You would also have to clean the sprayer out thoroughly after use because once the paint goes off nothing will move it. I spray all my parts using 2k clear but I use a compressor and spot repair gravity fed gun, I also have an air fed mask and 3 stage air filters because 2k paint is very hazardous, it contains isocyanates. It works well on epoxy(never tried VER, but should be fine) as for sanding/polishing, just use wet & dry paper to sand and finish off with a cutting compound, Farecla products are good, especially the Profile range. Hope this helps.
If you want to use the clear coat in mould you don’t have to worry about the surface because it is covered by fabrics and resin. The mould surface is the surface quality of the part. For small parts I paint, for bigger parts I use a spray gun with a compressor.
It can be wet sanded and polishe with the same stuff used for cars, I prefer 3M, expensive but the best.
Those spray bottles suck. You should get an HVLP gun with 2K automotive clear coat.
Coat the molds with duratec’s PE or VE top coat, then layup, demold, trim, sand, clear coat with the 2KPU clear coat. I’d recommend against clear coating the mold with a PU clear. Those are full solids. You’ll get no chemical bond.
