2 colour gel coat mouldings?

A supplier of mine makes me very nice motorcycle fuel tanks, which are finished in red and blue gel coat, which with the addition of a white vinyl decal, provides a look very close to that of original Honda colours.

Wonder if anyone has experience of using 2 different colours of gel coat in the same mould? Seems to me he achieves this by simply masking a line along the mould, brushing on 2 coats of gel on one side of the line, waiting for it to tack, then doing the same on the other side.

He doesnt have spray equipment, so I know all this is done using a brush, which bearing in mind that very little masking is required, is probably going to be faster than spraying anyway.

This 2 colour finish is highly effective, and is something that can mean original looks, for any 3 colour original parts, by merely adding a vinyl decal.

Nice to hear from anyone who has tried this, as its something I would like to try myself in future, after making the necessary 2 piece moulds to allow easy masking lines.

i have made a couple small boat, like little kid small lol and I used 4 or 5 gel coat colors. Also hyde drift boats is a half an hour from me and they use multi color gel coats. Most boat manufactures I know use multiple color gel coats. It is all in the masking

I made a couple parts in Red and White.

What I did was mask the line that I wanted the color change from and shot the RED first. then I peeled the the tape and shot the white in the void. I made sure to overlapp it a bit to help with strength but I dont think it mattered.

Im sure you know this but always shoot (brush) the way that will make bleeds or taints hard to see…color wise.

I dont have any pics but the undertail I built worked out fine. I didnt want to paint it and had the different gelcoat colors from other projects.

Thanks…I will try it when I make some simple Kawasaki side panels I have to do in the next few weeks (colour doesnt matter as they will be painted, so ideal to practice on!).
