my first presentable piece

hello.

this is not a new product, i had made it some time ago, but just for fun as i was hanging around the workshop waiting for some gelcoat to dry, i decided to laquer it , with a spray can. i had it to be thrown away, cause it was infused with vinylester, and it had some yellow tint to it because the resin was really dark, and it had a couple of bubbles too… but after i laquered it, the yellowness went completely away! i took it out and layed it on my headlight, which already has another eyelid, thats why u see it doesnt fit perfectly, and took a photo. i was so pleased that i sanded it down again, drilled the bubbles open, filled them with resin and now im gonna laquer it properly in the spraying oven.

i know its not much, but im a noob… heheh

warning! laquer will not last under UV exposure!!! it will yellow and flake off like those ford tempos you see bing driven around…

looks nice though!

how come laquer on a car doesnt yellow?

My understanding is that it will yellow. I have talked to several automotive painters about clearcoats and laquers and they all say that it will look good for some time and then deteriorate…

i’ve heard of the exact opposite. that resin will yellow unless laquered.

Aga, there are different types of clear coat.

Acrylic Enamel,
Laquer,
Urethane.

Urethane is the best hands down. Acrylic enamel would be my second choice. Laquer… not so good.

If you want a good aerosol spray clearcoat go with Upol brand. It’s expensive but for good reason… it lasts and has a great shine.

also there are a few aerosol 2 part uerathane clears available on the market. they are limited since they are one time use only. they cost about 25-30 bux a pop but are an actual automotive finish and have a fan spray nozzel.

pop the top, puncture the seal on the bottom, shake, spray.

you can get them from your loco automotive paint supply store. 100 times better than rattle can clears imo.

thanks guys , but like i said, im giving my stuff to my friend who’s a pro and he clearcoats my stuff in a car body shop, in an oven, so i believe the parts will live long (and prosper)

i think what i used is acrylic enamel (automotive paint in spray can) . i just call everything laquer

no problem

Speaking of clear coat… I almost bought a Harbor Freight HVLP spray gun today… only $10, it had the perfect size tip (1.4mm) for spraying clear coat. I had to pass though because i needed so many other things first. It wasn’t a bad trip… i got a bag of 50 rags for $8 and a box of cheap paint brushes for $6. Money well spent.

honestly dont get a cheap harbour frieght clear gun… unless you like orange peel. i have a sata jet. i only shoot clear through it. usually sherwin williams or omni sv only. the sherwin williams matched with the sata jet issss awesome. i usually dont have to do much of any buffing or polishing. btw i shoot automotive uerethane. you get what you pay for.

my mate uses 1.2 needle for colors and clear coats, i got 3 guns. a 2.0 for gelcoat, a 1.6 for primer and i got a 1.0 which i intend to use for paints and clear. i hope its not too small…
