My first carbon part, infused

doogie,

The price of paint pressure pots over here is ridiculous, i did think about getting one though then the old brain started whirring away  and before i knew it i was looking around my local hardware store. A lot of pleasure saving a few pennies

Fox,

I`ve just reread what you said above about your surprise at the amount of flow media i used maybe i was a bit misleading when i said 6 layers i did mean just the jackets they were about 2 inches wide only and as long as necessary.

Baz

can you do a bigger picture of that tube and maybe label what goes where? i bought some of the same tube and caps but havent done anything with it yet…

gtfour,

I`ll give it a go hope it works.
Anyway you can make the tube any length you like mines about 600mm and its i epoxied it to an mdf base for stability, make sure you add some lubricant to the seals in the end fittings i used a silicon spray but a little oil would be okay. Pay particular attention to sealing the plumbing fittings then put it on test, mine lost no vacuum at all and that was left on all night and OH YES make sure the tube that goes through the fitting thats drilled 15mm straight through protrudes a few inches inside the tube so its well away from the suction port and to make doubly sure i wrapped some peel ply around the end of the suction port fitting inside the tube (paranoid about ruining my pump)

Hope its clear enough if not ill try again

where does the copper pipe go to? the pump i presume?

yep, copper pipe with valve to pump, the other to mould

did you get all this from b+q?

No, i do gas work for my subcontractors so i have all the fittings B&Q are expensive but you can get it all there or a plumbers merchants would be cheaper

Baz

And finally installed in new home

baznos I have a friend that just got that same car, in yellow
thats a merker? or something
Iam makin some inner door pannels for him…

Fox, yes a Merkur was made i remember seeing them over here in the late 80`s, powerful beast turboed V6 i think.

Mines a Sierra RS Cosworth with over 500bhp not too many of them left either now

f’in nice mang!!!

Wow a Sierra cosworth, that is a beast. Who did the engine boost? Fischesato? I know he is famous for the Escort 400cv that was a killer.
Nice job and it looks beautiful in the car.

Is that with a 2.3 turbo or is it a twin cam head? I race a Mercury Capri 2 as a Nascar Mini Stock at Irwindale Speedway here in So. Calif. and I race agianst mostly Pintos!

Did you know you can put a Volvo twin cam 16V head on a Ford 2.3 almost directly? There’s some little mods to do but it is not to difficulty…

Here you go then a couple of pics of the engine, i keep looking at it and think what can i produce outta carbon, something will come to me.

The engine was built to RS 500 touring car spec running 8 injectors by Graham Goode Racing here in the UK, they used to race these awsome cars in the late 80s early 90s so i new they could build me a strong engine. It`s a 2 litre twin cam, in standard form they produced 204 bhp but this one produces 450 bhp + a 75 shot of nitrous (not evident in these early pics) these engines are now being built here producing close to 800 bhp.

Anyway i know this is a composite site and not a car site so i`ll leave it there before someone tells me to lol.

Thanks for the comments on my first carbon part guys, when you get something right it makes all the learning failures seem worthwhile, being persistant and not being beaten by this black art really pays off when you see what you can produce with determination and patience and out of a little old garage

Baz

one more pic

for a first part that is amazing… infact thats just plain stunning.

how long (years/months) did it take you before you had a part that good to show off?

with any luck i’m about to do my first bonnet in carbon. fingers crossed it half as good as that!!

Refo,

I started dabbling with carbon in December of last year, well actally making a mould of my dash with the intention of making one out of carbon.
I made the mould but soon realised that it was not going to be as easy as i thought so i decided to just make the mould and leave it in the corner and gain some experience on something simpler, so i decided an easier project would be to create a copy in mdf of my cargo cover then a mould suitable for infusion. The cargo cover took 2 failed attempts the third being perfect but i will still not attempt the dash yet.

All of this would not have been possible without the invaluable help of all those who frequent this board experts and novices alike, i cannot thank them enough, they don`t know they helped me but all of their posts have.

I should say that 25 years ago i worked in a boat yard as a marine engineer and frequented the mould shop so i knew about plug and mould making in fibreglass it was just the black art of carbon i needed to research.

Anyway thanks for your comments on the cargo cover, i have many more parts to make and more moulds in the pipeline.
