nice site… i already registered
Polytex high gloss is this the clear gel coat your talking about using?
And if that is the stuff is your site working enough that i can place an order today on it?
Thanks. Actually yeah the site is working right now as it is. Pick the paypal payment option though because I do not have the credit card machine setup at the new shop yet. If you have problems with the shopping cart then let me know… I am still playing around with it to find bugs and whatnot.
Evan
what about that semi perm mold realase stuff i didnt see it on the site yet. how much will it run?
Cause i think i can make the next set of parts with the wax i have (sine there mainly flat) and the clear gel coat i will buy from you. But if the other wax sutff isnt that pricy i’ll just go ahead and get now too.
When do you think you will have your c.card machine setup, cause i kinda hate paypal… bad experiance’s with them, but i’ll use it if that all there is.
Actually, nevermind. Go ahead and pick the credit card option. I’ll keep it on file and run it once the machine is up. I don’t stock any of that mold release right now so I couldn’t sell it to you anyway. Pricing wise it’s about the price of a few cans of wax. I can’t say for sure. This stuff isn’t cheap, but it’s well worth it considering the performance and all the time that you save “wax on & wax off”.
well i tried to check out but there was no options for selecting paymet types so it wouldnt go past that point…
Anyways i’m on the way out now, so i’ll try it again tomorrow… thanks man…
Ok I think it’s fixed now.
yep its working… order placed… man its been awhile since i paid sales tax…lol usually try and buy everything out of state…
do you think brushing on the clear gel coat in the mold before c/f layup will produce the same results as spraying it? i’m sure it wont be as even of a coat but dont want to spend 100 on a gel gun right now…
Actually you can’t even spray epoxy gel coat because it’s even thicker than polyester gelcoat. Thicker than that orange tooling gel coat that you have.
lol damm thats thick then…
Btw the helpful hints you have about cutting the brush a bit and all is good stuff… it would be cool to have little facts like that for all the products…
So when brushing it on do i need to worry about it sticking to the edges of the mold (where its trimmed and the fiberglass is) not the mold surface itself.
Any pointers when working with the clear gelcoat, since it will be the fished side of my part?
I’m working on the PDF document for that as we speak. I’ll let you know once it’s uploaded.
how goes the PDF?
Mm… it should be done but I can’t remember for some reason. Try this link: http://www.icancomposites.com/pdf/Polytex.pdf
Alright it works. Yeah it should be there now.
yea i just looked it over… lol i thought it was the tabel top covering stuff…
Have you had any problems using it? or have any tips to make it come out better in the end… I figuer i will do 5 coats of the partial wax before applying this to the molds.
Also how exact is this stuff? cause currently i dont do an exact mesuer of mixing resin and hardner currently and i’ve never had a problem with any of them either c/f ones or fiber glass…
What do you mean as far as problems? Any specific concerns that you might have? That torch light trick really helps take out all the tiny air bubbles. Just slightly flame kiss the surface with quick overpasses or else you’ll end up cooking the resin.
i was jsut wondering how easly it goes on and coats. Will it stay on semi vertical surfaces, or will it puddle rather easly… how thick of a layer should i brush on before letting it gel up to add the c/f.
i’ll have to give the flame thing a try…lol i’ll probably cook the 1st one… Does it bubble alot?
Most of the bubbles come from mixing the resin. A lot of it you can’t even see but it’ll show up once you start sanding it down smooth. It’ll stay on semi vertical surfaces and it’ll puddle at the same time. If you want to make a thick paste out of it… you’ll need to mix in some cabosil (glass bubbles). The only drawback of doing this is it’ll start to turn milky white instead of staying clear. That’s because the cabosil is almost transparent white. You can counter this by mixing in a little bit of black pigment. It tends to cancel out the cloudiness caused by cabosil. I’ll look into selling these two products soon because I don’t stock them. How much of each to mix is questionable. I haven’t figured out a good ratio yet so you’ll have to do a little bit of testing.
I normally brush the first coat on very very thin. It’s served as the seal coat only to block off any holes or what not. Everything after that is applied thick but not too thick that it’ll run off or puddle. When I have a flat surface, I just pour it on and let it level itself. I don’t even use the brush. Too bad not everything is perfectly flat though.
yea flat would make it a lot easier… So how thick is the 2nd coat usually… about 1/32" or so…
I know there will be a lot of testing to see what will work for the parts i’m doing, but talking to you helps that process a long a lot faster thanks…
i’ll post about how its goes when i try it on the next part, since that will be the one i plan to do for reals now…
Geez… 1/32? Sure why the hell not. That sounds close enough I think. lol
The only bad thing about putting it on too thick is that it’ll start running around the edges. That results in more sanding work later on. I hate sanding by the way. Drips and stuff are a pain in the butt too. I normally wait until it’s almost fully cured and then take a razor blade and cut off all the dripage. That way I don’t have to sand or trim it off with a carbite cutter.
yea i’m not a big fan of sanding… lol luckely my air sander and a hefty grit paper takes it off quickly…
Yea the only part that really concerns me is the edges. where the mold ends, and having the gel stick to it, since the part i’m thinking of off hand is vertical on the edges…
i will try more knife cutting durring the curing stages, so far i have only trimmed of the large parts and left about a 1/2" all around to sand off later…
question tho while were on the fun sanding… how well will the clear take to sanding and still having a clear finish? Say i roaly screw up and needs some 220 grit, then go 400, 800, and 1000 (last 3 wet) will it be clear after that, or do i need a polishing compound after that?
