Infusion-finishing-gelcoat-clearcoat

I’d like to see the results of the HP-IMC!
I had a quote from a supplier here, but he only has 25 kg packages. Bit mucht for a boat wich is barely heavier…

Infusion today…

Well, HP-IMC did not work with DION9100 VE Resin… Infusion was performed after 24h cure at 22C (as per technical instructions) Resin cure was 24h at 20-23C and the result is soft looking layer which peals of the surface. So it is not possible to demold the part and postcure. I will do another infusion and postcure it vacuumed at 60C to see what happens.

It seems to me like VE is eating in to IMC and softens it, but maybe postcure will harden it all.

A few thoughts:

  1. Some resins and IMC (in mold coating) don’t work. Who know why…

  2. If you put the IMC in too thick you get a lot of solvent/carrier suspension. Essentially the surface cures before the underlying solvents have time to escape. This results in soft finish that takes a long time to fully cure. Typically light coats are safer and faster.

Sicomin showed me a new in mould coating (PU based) which they introduced at the show. Purposed for epoxy.

Well, all i tried works with epoxyes and that was expected. Basic ppg PU, PU with additives and IMC all have no problems.

True, true… This was 0.06mm layer, as suggested. Will try thinner one and IMC oven cure prior to infusion.

The odd thing is that if peeled right off. I don’t think that a longer/different cure is going to fix that.

I will ask Nord Composites if they have or can make a gelcoat without silica.

Thats interesting, I thought it will work.
It is no problem to spray obe thicker layer, that always worked at me. I think the problem
might be the dimethacrylate in the VE. That can softn the pu based systems. That like the effect of superglue (cyanacrylate) on a clear coated part.
Try to heat the mould with the system of your choice up to 70 C before you start with the layup.
Why don’t you work with epoxy?

VE from DION series proved to be better (my point of view) in following aspects:

Processing - not demanding post cure
Heat resistance and resistance to heat cycling without any physical changes
Having no visual changes after 3 years

And, we dont have a good supplier of epoxy. Available here is Elantas, R&G at a cosmic price and WestSystem at stratosphere price. I can import on may own of coarse but testing the 3 above didnt convince me to try. I personally like sticking with VE but a batch of Infusion Epoxy from HP-Textiles is coming so don`t think I have a narrow view…

A sample of Nord Composites is on its way to me:

quote of Nord:
very clear GC called GC 860 clear 9901 specially designed for very transparent parts. There is some aerosil in it but not so much.

well, exactly that is what reichhold said… basically it`s not that much blue but it is blue. easy way to determine is to look at the gelcoats under blacklight - uv and see how much it glows. Normal gelcoat has an alien looking aura to it  the special one i got has maybe 60% less glow but PU has none and that-whatever causes the glowing is making the bluish appearance as well…

And the transparency, i don’t think it matters on carbon parts as gelcoat is 0,3-0,5mm thick, minus sanding and polishing so on layer that tin I think the difference is not noticeable… Maybe that comes to play when you have some bright colored something that you want to be visible underneath.

I`m interested in what You will get?

Where do I find this clear? I need a good clear for Carbon. I need a inmold clear.

Duratec Sunshield !!
