How dangerous is Epoxy?

I used poly for about 4 months, most of the time without using a charcoal respirator ( dumb ). I never got sick feeling, but lightheaded many many times. evacuate yourself to fresh air when you are not needing to work directly with the resins. No sense in hanging around watching resin cure.

I’m going to purchase a new charcoal respirator ( my paint store has them on sale for $14!) while working with any epoxy. I have to admit 98% of the time i do not use respirator with epoxy. Dumb again… I shouldn’t take health risks like this.

I have used acetone for many years 10. I feel i did get some adverse nerve effects from coming in contact or breathing the fumes even though I use small amounts but I do use it every day. Again… buy a pair of chemical resistant gloves and wear a charcoal respirator.

i’ve been working with resins for 2.5 years. never had irritation, headaches or anything, but my mask has become my face. i wear it always when im laminating or spraying, even pva, and also when cutting parts. i ve heard stories about polyester users what have gone sterile after years of professional work without respirators.

pva will make ya sick spraying without a mask.

It’s been said before but I’d start by getting the material data safety sheets (MSDS). They will tell you what is in the resin and how much, how and where to store them, what to do for exposure. They can be quite interesting, the epoxies I use say if you get them in you eye see a doctor but if you eat it have a glass of water and rinse your mouth and nothing about a doctor.

I’ve found the hardeners are the nasty part, and the slower they are the worse they seem to be one. We use one that I’m real sensitive to, luckily we don’t use it much. And I try not to have PE or VE in the factory at all. We got to air tested for VOCs and near our tin of car bog was over 4000ppm and in an epoxy drum 300ppm.

Thats weird, I always found the faster hardeners to be nastier.

Guess it must depend on the brand and what they put in. We get ours from a local company in Auckland called Adhesive Technologies who make their own. Which is awesome, I called them up wanting a wear resistant black high temp epoxy gel coat, and they came up with one in 2 days.
