Oh, and weight of each is 7.3 oz. Savings of 14 lbs off the front end.
Not as bad as I expected. I have seen worse.
So the gaps between the fibres are as a result of the breather fabric wicking away the resin?
Would then a film with less perforations reduce the amount of wick that has occurred?
I must admit that I seem to suffer more from that defect, that you have illustrated, during the winter rather than the summer…so I guess during the warmer summer the resin gels quicker and thus less resin is wicked into the breather fabric when compared to the colder months of the winter.
I also note that when the temperatures are much warmer the resin appears to self-purge itself of air, whereas during the winter months it takes longer for the air to purge itself from the mixed resin and thus you end up with more tiny air bubble defects in the items surface…Am I correct in my thinking?
Yes, you are correct. And with the different available perforations you can steer the resin.
Herman,
When you apply the perf release film, do you need to be careful in complex curves as to not overlap the film over itself, potentially blocking the holes?
Yes and no. Yes, overlapping film blocks holes, but if the overlaps are not dramatic, there is nothing to worry about.
That leads me to another question about perf film in infusions.
I only have experience using peel ply, with flow media on top. Removing that from the part is far too difficult, and I don’t have a real need for the texture for secondary bonding.
Can i use a perf film, then a flow media on top of that? If so, what is a good specification for the perf film for an infusion? Hole spacing and size?
You can perfectly infuse without peelply. The term peelply is a bit misleading. Yes, you can peel it off, but if there is something (mesh) on top…
The perforated film is the stuff that makes things come apart. For infusion use a film with a lot of open area. For instance P, P1, P16, MP22.
I’d like to make several sets of these, but I simply am too busy to do so, at least at this point. Is anyone interested in making a a few sets of parts out of this mold. I could crate it up and send it to you. I’d be looking for lightweight infusion parts. If so, please sent me a message, or reply here.
Thanks,
Kevin
I’d be interested in talking to you you about making some of these parts. I have a small 3 man carbon fiber shop in Houston. We build molds and do infusion of some Porsche, BMW bumpers fenders hoods ect. Your molds look fine so I see no problem if you don’t find anything close. Just pm me or call 713-898-2286. Ro Yale
Nice job on the molds!
Infusion can be a bitch at times, looking to transition to ooa’s myself for that reason. Different can of worms but at least I might like the flavor better…
