Fast Forward Full Carbon Project

Thanks! I’m fascinated by how it all comes together. If you have the time and photos I would love to see more pics of the tooling and finished components individually and as you assembled them. Do you have a documented build of the bike anywhere?

Thanks! I’m fascinated by how it all comes together. If you have the time and photos I would love to see more pics of the tooling and finished components individually and as you assembled them. Do you have a documented build of the bike anywhere? Nevermind, google was my friend! http://www.designbikes.de/tank_d.htm

Oh yeah, that site tells the story of the beginning in 2003 but is not up to date. I made the last entry in 2007. I am currently quite busy prepairing the participation at Composites 2013 in Orlando. But i found some pictures in regard to the tank, model-making.

And here are some pictures about how i built the monocoque mould and how i got into the monocoque (which also works as airbox) to combine the different carbon parts to one unit. You see the openings for the air funnels and the electronic box (which is a separate unit to ensure the tightness of the airbox). Additionally i could reach the inner cavity through some other openings (e.g. under the seat and closed with a lid), gas tank ventilation (sealed between tank and airbox), or the intake manifold.

Your molds look great, thanks for posting. I still do not understand how you were able to lay up the carbon, peelply, flowmedia, MTI etc into the internal walls with a totally sealed mold and infuse? I am missing something… Or in your earlier pictures are you infusing several of the components individually and then bond them together later inside of the larger multipiece mold fully assembled?

How many liters can you hold in the gas tank?

Yes, i used the different pieces (17) of the disassembled multipiece mould to infuse all the necessary components individually and bond them together later on in the reassembled mould.

The gas tank is good for app. 16 liter.

Good job and nice final render !
You’ve some nice racing parts on your bike :stuck_out_tongue:

I actually do the same work on my Ducati 1098R with 1198RS motor

Excellent work, thanks for posting it.

Just found this after searching for some info on monocoque subframes. Awesome work there, love the shape of your bodywork, especially all the different angles in the tail section. Looks great!

Was it difficult to keep everything symmetrical? Or did you just keep drawing guidelines on the plug to make sure you were working in the right direction? Did you have a template as well? Like a printout on paper that you could keep placing on the plug to make sure it was all correct? Thanks for posting those progress pictures, always good to see how things like this come together.

Thanks for the compliment. The symmetry was indeed the most challenging topic. Thats the reason why the master pattern took 1.5 years. I tried a lot of different ways to get everything in the right direction. I made several templates, used straightedges and these lines on the pattern. I had to reshape the part uncountless times. At the end you have to trust your eyes. I guess Id never do this job again by hand. The next project would probably be designed on the PC and the master pattern produced with a 3D-printer.

The project is now finalized after 2.5 years. During the first successful test ride the Titanium exhaust manifolds have obviously assimilated some rainbow colors…

Very nice ride you have there.

Verrrry niiice!!

Thanks for posting the completed photo - I had spent so much time looking at the composites work previously that I didn’t really notice that fantastic frame!

What is your plans for the bike now? Are you going to be hitting the bike show circuit?

Thanks for the compliment. The plans? Good question; First I offer the project story to some professional trade magazins. And, since the bike is actually the nucleus of my new company Im thinking about shipping it to the USA and taking it with me to the composite trade shows and maybe bike shows. I really dont know if the US guys like that style?

I’m sure that you will find some people everywhere who like the bike… perhaps moreso among the streetfighter crowd? They always seem to love a good nakedbike (or just anything that doesn’t have full fairings. Haha).

It may be worth contacting some of the bike mags - for instance Performance Bikes in the UK, I’m sure they’d go in for this type of thing. Not sure about mags in the U.S… I think Germany and Europe generally have some good streetfighter mags? In Australia there is a new independant magazine called Tank Moto, it’s only quarterly, but it’s a quality mag. There’s also Rapid Bikes. Plenty of other “run of the mill” type mags around, but those are the ones I’d think are more likely to want to feature your bike.

You never know, can’t hurt to send an email with some photos and a brief rundown? After all - spending that much time on a project, you want as many people as possible to see it, right?!

There are even more motorcycle forums where heaps of people would love to see a build thread, if you’re so inclined to show photos of your process and be prepared to share details and answer a few questions.

Absolutely incredible. I love it. I happen to be a full ferring kinda guy. But overall I love creativity, and you are no slouch in that department. I know what you mean about the US guys as well, most of the people here cant even conjure up a thought of their own without copying someone they saw on television. Its kind of a drag sometimes when you live in a country overrun by commercialism. Its not all bad though. I dont mind being a sheppard in the land of a million sheep.

Awesome project man, good good job.

brother that is gorgeous. hat’s off.

Awesome project! Really like the finished product!

The project has been published in the December issue of a motorcycle magazine and I`ve received some professional pictures from the press photographer. Uploaded them on the first post of this thread.
