Ethanol resistant resin questions

As someone who has already made a tank I will offer this bit: do NOT use epoxy for the tank, regardless of what you coat it with. A scratch on the inside or spillage on the outside will wreck your project.

I used epoxy with POR15 in a tank specifically used for race fuel and it started to get pinhole leaks after about a year. No ethanol in the fuel either.

Anyway, I am in the process of making v2 gas tank with vinylester and using the Bill Hersh sealant this time around to see how it performs.

Damn! Thats not what I wanted to hear. Ive just purchased about a gallon of epoxy but I can use it for the mold making as epoxy has near zero shrink rates so dimensionally I should be fine. Then I`d use the vinylester for the tank itself.

Did the tank start to get soft where it was leaking or was it at the lap joint where the two halves were joined?

George, thanks for the tips. I had looked at Bader resins before but ran into shipping and quantity issues but I may have to revisit them. Living in Canada with a small market (1/10th of the USA) limits the sources I can use before costs get out of hand.
