Carbon/Kevlar heat extractor hood for ZL1 Camaro

great looking result!
did you clearcoat it or you just polish it out ?

Thanks, and that is very true sir. All the sanding sucks. Im usually super motivated and enthusiastic about all the stuff I make, right up untill the day comes when I know all I will be doing is sanding all day.

It is clear coated, then the clear is wet sanded and buffed.

What kind of resin are you using to withstand the engine bay heat?

just good ol vinylester.

That looks amazing. I’ve heard some people say that they were disappointed with the color accented weaves because they always became much, much darker after being wet out with resin, and that thought passed through my mind because of your pictures in posts 3 and 4 (especially 3!). But after a nice flow layer and the clear, the color of the red filaments (is it Kevlar or fiberglass???) come through very, VERY nicely. Looks great!

Thanks for the compliment. Up until just recently, the hybrid fabrics would darken up “alot”, some of them would even loose the appearance of the fiber itself. You end up with a solid flat colored block pattern in the end instead of an interwoven fibrous reflective 3dimensional effect. This has happened to every peice of colored glass that I have ever seen. It seems as though they have changed something in the way the kevlar is dyed that lets it shine a lot more while retaining the color as well. When you see the red in the sunlight, it looks just like kandy apple red.

Can you tell me where you ordered your fabric from? I’m thinking about getting some colored weave carbon soon and would like to make sure I get the same model that you did.
Thanks!

I usualy go through US Composites in Palm Beach, if they dont have what you are looking for, you can go with Composite Envisions, their website has quite a bit to choose from.

Great, thanks! In another thread someone said that composite envisions usually buys their colored fabric from sollercomposites.com and just resells it after marking it up, if that’s true you should look into ordering from them instead to save a few bucks

Looks very good! Would of loved to of known how the hell you didnt get any air bubbles in there!

Is this your Camaro if not did the customer love it? The carbon work that is… not he car…

The Camaro belongs to a client of the company I was working for. I’m not sure if he loved it or not. Due to the current feelings I have toward my previous employer, and my own personal belief of not defaming my professional character, I wont discuss the details of why over a public forum.

As long as my resin is at a slightly warmer temp, I dont usually see too many bubbles. A couple pinholes every now and then, but nothing a tiny touch of clear cote, or a drop of resin and a tooth pick cant cure.

You cant show up to the dance without your bowtie.

Upper radiator support, and A pillars.

Cold air intake tube, drain caps, and center console side panels (crab claws).

Instrument cluster bezel, door panel insert.

Fantastic work you do.
Are they all overlays?

Very nice I like the red.

Thanks again sir. All overlays except for the radiator support and drain caps.
I may suck it up and roll the dice, and order some carbon with a gold piece of tow incorporated. Im going to be super pissed if it doesnt look like I want it to after wetting it out.
