Styrofoam prep?

Time to chime in… Floral foam is also PUR foam. You can find floral foam at any arts and crafts store. Like this:

Make sure you buy the right type. There are some types that appear to be PS.

Why exactly do you guys have a problem with EPS foam (styrofoam), as a plug material?

What is difference between PU and PUR foam.
Where can I buy PUR foam in europa. Does it exist in spray bottle.

Can someone tell me supplier for PUR foam and fiberglass material in europa maybe in Italy or Germany.

PM classic bike he is in the UK

Hexcel has a plant in France but thats about all I know.

I find PUR foam. Can someone write me material checklist I am little confused aboute material checklist I need to buy

What kaind fiberglass and resin to use for mold and for bumper.

polyester resin
chopped strand matt 1.5 oz
plain weave fiberglass 6oz
surfacing veil
mekp
tooling gelcoat in your choice of color

that list will pretty much let you build anything you want

Acetone, bristle brushes, latex / vinyl gloves, sand papers and on and on…

Can I use this fiberglass 1.5oz and 6oz on pic.
How many type of weave style exists: plain weave, 4H satin,8H satin, Leno and where is application of each type.
Now when I know what kaind fiberglass to use for mold and bumper, what kaind resin to use with this fiberglass.

Both of those are very thin and it will take many layers (not cut the same laid out) to make a mold (3 to 5x thicker than the finish part) or a part.

Any binding agent (PER, VER or Epoxy) resin will work with woven cloth materials. With FG mat, you need PER to break down the styrene binding agents…

How big of a part are you thinking of doing?

You also might want to start a new thread with your questions too…

Glenn, too many times newbies cheap out buying PS foam and then spend / waste much more money and time coating it so they can use PER. Then they lose interest and drop out…:o

They could use Epoxy resin to cot the plug but most don’t want to spend the money there and if they had spent it on PUR foam in the first place, they would be miles ahead.

Yes, a hot wire works great on PS (polystyrene foam) BUT never use one on PUR (polyurethane) as the fumes are toxic!

Dimension of bumper are 1,8x0,7x0,7 meter.
So how many layers I need to lay down with 6oz fiberglass.
What kaind Epoxy resin you use.

your mold should be no less than 4 times thicker than your part.

Ive made parts with 6layers of 6oz glass (infused) and it was whimpy flexible. So I backed it up with an additional four layers to make it rigid enough for my application.

so if you have 10 layers of 6oz…and you built your mold out of nothing but plain weave 6oz…it would be 40 layers thick.

Id suggest instead you use a few layers of surfacing veil, a couple layers of 1.5oz chopped matt, and finish with a few layers of plain weave 6oz.

My molds are roughly 1/4" thick. my thinner ones are for ones and twos in prototyping parts.

I dont plane to do vacuum bagging or infusion just hand laying.

it doesnt matter…

you dont want a mold too thin, it will crack and or warp with repeated heat from molding in it.

The minimum thickness Ive run more than say 5 parts from is 1/8th inch and it didnt last too much longer.

So can I use bigger oz fiberglass for mold and less layers.

Yes, but don’t cut all the layers the same direction off the roll…

Werksberg: tell me something, are you teacher or student ho work with composite materials.
